2010 Categories and Awards

Novels:
First 10 pages, plus a synopsis of no more than 2 additional (double-spaced) pages.
Category #1: Mainstream
Category #2: Mystery, Suspense, or Thriller
Category #3: Historical or Western
Category #4: Romance
Category #5: Science Fiction, Fantasy, or Horror
Category #6: Juvenile or Young Adult
Other Categories:
Category #7: Short Story – 12 pages or less
Category #8: Nonfiction Article or Essay – 2,000 words or less
Category #9: Nonfiction book – same as category #1
Category #10: Screenplay – First 20 pages or less, screenplay format, plus a treatment
of 3 pages or less, (double-spaced)
Category #11: Memoir – Nostalgia or Reminiscence, 2,000 words or less
Category #12: Juvenile or Young Adult Short – fiction or nonfiction – short story,
picture book text, or article

Published Authors will score the first round in each category. The top 6 entries will be forwarded
to professionals in the writing field for the final round judging. Cash prizes and certificates will be awarded to the top 3 scores
in each category having 10 or more entries. Categories not having 10 or more entries will receive certificates only.
Certificates will be awarded to the fourth-place entrants in each category.
Score sheets will be provided to each judge, and comments are encouraged, but not guaranteed.

(There must be at least 10 entries for the category to qualify for cash prizes.)
Categories of less than 10 entries will have top six sent to a finals judge, who will choose 1st and 2nd.

All first place winners, including first place entries in categories of less than 10 entries, will be eligible for this award.

2010 Contest Rules
1. Deadline: Entries must be postmarked no later than March 1, 2010.

2. SUBMIT one (1) copy of entry, which must be an original, unpublished work, by you, not sold or optioned
prior to this contest deadline. Entries placing in the top 3 of each category from the FIW 2009 contest are
ineligible.
3. All entries must be double-spaced (unless otherwise specified in the category listings) typed Courier or Times New Roman
in 12-point font size on one side of 81/2” x 11” white paper with 1” margins on all sides. Black ink only.
4. Put your name on the Contest Entry Form and outside envelope only. An author’s name on any part of the
entry pages will result in immediate disqualification without refund.
5. Type the title on the first page and the title or keyword(s) on the top left corner of each succeeding page.
Number the pages consecutively beginning with the first page of your manuscript. Synopses, treatments, and
outlines should be numbered consecutively, but separately from the manuscript.
6. Mark your category number(s) on the outside of the envelope in the lower right corner, as well as on your
SASE.
7. A separate entry form is required for each submission. (Make photocopies of form before making
submissions so you’ll have enough.) All entries can be submitted in one envelope.
8. Do not send anything signature required. Either use “Delivery Confirmation” service provided by the Post
Office, or enclose a self-addressed, stamped post card (SASP), with the entry, to be returned when your entry
is received.
9. Enclose a 9X12 self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) for return of entries, judges’ score sheets, and
any winner’s certificates and prizes. NOTE: this SASE should be the SAME POSTAGE amount as the envelope
mailing your entry.
(No metered mail for returns) Metered mail cannot be used on return envelope as it cancels after the date posted on it. Any
entry without SASE can be picked up at the conference, or it will be destroyed and no certificates or prizes will be sent, but
the entry will not be disqualified.
10. Entries failing to comply with these rules will be disqualified and returned, as stated.
No refunds for disqualified entries.
